Though they are now working at a higher resolution, Purity Ring remain hands-on with every aspect of their project. The emotional geography of Another Eternity is wider than ever: gloomy valleys and gleaming peaks in even measure. “repetition” finds surreal, love-lorn lyricism soaring over delicately woven synths. “stillness in woe” features a frozen, manipulated piano, dovetailing with Megan’s time suspending narrative. “bodyache” is the kind of devastatingly infectious single that their previous work only gestured at.
“begin again” rouses Purity Ring’s brooding balladry into a sky-reaching anthem while retaining its distinctive shape. Corin Roddick’s gifts for evocative melody remain intact, but his drum work and use of space have been completely reforged: immaculately built and focused in service of the song. Crafting a lyrical universe of “sweat and dreams” populated by seacastles, rattling spines, and weeping drawers, Megan James wields concrete imagery and metaphor with increasingly direct, startling resonance. On Another Eternity, Purity Ring trade the gorgeously claustrophobic atmospheres of Shrines for wide-open, muscular vistas of sound and luminous, up-front vocals. They quickly amassed a rabid fanbase, toured relentlessly and sold out shows worldwide. Critics were psyched: ‘Best New Music’ from Pitchfork and praise from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and NPR, among others. At the center of the amniotic swirl of Shrines was an undeniable nucleus of crystalline pop which presciently suggested both indie and popular music to come. Despite being a thousand kilometers apart and barely talking, Shrines was a cohesive, beguiling and wholly unique universe of what the band called ‘Future Pop’.
Purity Ring’s first album Shrines was recorded separately in Montreal and Halifax, where Corin and Megan were respectively living at the time. For the first time, vocalist Megan James and producer Corin Roddick were able to create a record in the same room.
The pair ventured home to the frozen industrial landscapes of their birthplace Edmonton, Alberta to document much of what was to become the album. And understanding the benefits of abstinence and the ways to avoid temptation are more important than a ring.After sixty-five fortnights, Purity Ring have returned with their super-tight second album Another Eternity. In the end, however, one’s relationship with God is much more important than any outward sign. It can certainly act as a marker to identify others who have made the same commitment. There is nothing wrong with wearing a purity ring, as long as the commitment to remain abstinent is sincere. It should not be motivated by the excitement of a rally or the fear of dishonoring one’s father. A commitment to remain abstinent until marriage is a good and noble thing (Ephesians 5:3), but it should be done within the context of a relationship with God and a desire to lean on His understanding. A girl’s purity is not more valuable than a boy’s. A father who gives his daughter a ring does not “own” his daughter’s sexuality. A purity ring is not a talisman that magically prevents pre-marital sex. “You should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God.” “For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life” (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, 7).Ībstinence training is essential, and it is equally essential that the training include accurate information. There is no doubt that God calls His children to sexual purity. Purity rings are not mentioned in the Bible. Both men and women can wear purity rings. But purity rings can also be purchased from a store or online and worn at whim. In some families, fathers present a ring to their young daughters after an extensive ceremony. There are several vendors of purity rings, and no standardized procedure to receive and wear one. The purity ring was created in the 1990s by Christian abstinence groups, including Lifeway Bookstore’s “True Love Waits,” but may have been inspired by the band nuns wear to symbolize their lifelong commitment to serve God. A purity ring is a ring worn by a single teenager or adult to signify that they have made a commitment to remain abstinent from sex until marriage.
